Self-guided digital city tours on your phone

A digital city tour is a walking tour you take on your own with your smartphone – whenever you like, at your own pace, without booking and without a tour guide. On LocationHunt, GPS leads you from stop to stop. Only when you are really standing at the spot does the next chest open: with stories, photos, sometimes an audio story or a riddle.

That turns a walk into an interactive city tour: you hear the history and the anecdotes right where they happened.

How the interactive city tour works

  1. Pick a tour: under “Explore” you find walking tours and treasure hunts near you – with route length, number of stops and price.
  2. Start right in your browser: all you need is a phone with GPS. No app store download is needed; if you like, add LocationHunt to your home screen.
  3. Walk to the next stop: the map and a direction indicator guide you there (in Hard mode only a warmer/colder signal). At the spot, the chest opens.
  4. Discover the stories: texts, photos, audio stories and riddles – whatever the tour’s creator has prepared.

Visiting Germany? Good to know

What is different from a classic guided tour?

Who is a digital walking tour for?

For families with children, couples, groups of friends and team events, for visitors and day-trippers – and for locals who want to see their own town with new eyes. Each tour page shows under “Suitable for” what its creator recommends, for example a minimum age for children or whether the route works with a stroller.

Create your own digital city tour

Are you a tour guide, do you work in city marketing or a tourist office, or do you simply know the best stories of your town? With the quest editor you build your own digital city tour: place the stops on the map, add texts, photos, audio and riddles, and publish.

You decide whether your tour is free or paid. For paid tours you receive 70 % of the price (minus the payment fee). With the sticker studio you print QR codes that lead straight to your tour on site.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an app?

No. LocationHunt runs right in your phone’s browser. If you like, you can add it to your home screen like an app – without an app store.

Are the tours in English?

The app is in English, but each tour is written in the language its creator chose – most tours are currently in German. You can see the tour language before you start.

How much does a digital city tour cost?

The creator sets the price. Many tours are free; paid tours usually cost just a few euros. You see the price on the tour page before you start, and you can pay without an account.

Do I need mobile data on the way?

To start, yes. The tour’s content is loaded onto your phone when you start, and GPS works without a mobile signal – so weak reception on the way is usually not a problem.

Can we take part as a group or family?

Yes. You can walk together with one phone or each on your own. Children under 16 should be accompanied by an adult.
